Lisa King x Studio Shan
A batik painting commission for interior design studio Studio Shan for a residential renovation in West London.
Inspiration
Studio Shan wanted to create a piece for their client that reminded them of their home town Kuala Lumpur, using traditional textile techniques but in a modern way. We researched Malaysian flora and fauna, and the colours of the old architecture of the city.
Process
After several studies in watercolour, pencil we decided on a layout and carried out colour testing on fabric to get the palette just right. The batik process includes drawing onto cloth, then using a tool called a tjanting to outline the image in wax before applying laters of dye and more wax repeatedly onto the canvas. The last stage involves boiling the wax off before it is hung out to dry.
